Get Out - Review

I was pleasantly surprised with 'Get Out' - the film blends together comedy and horror in a way that doesn't appear forced or unnatural. Director Jordan Peele has crafted a movie based on a topic that is a metaphorical minefield; race is a topic that could easily have been manipulated to push an agenda, but instead Peele uses this as a storytelling platform, using the audience's own prejudices against them. As opposed to using the typical 'racism is bad' meaning, the film rather seems to poke fun at modern culture's overcompensation for the issue; the protagonist's girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams) appears to be the main culprit of this, but a later reveal shows that this theme has been used for a reason.

While I didn't find the film particularly scary, it makes you think. This is something I have found is missing in many modern horror films where the 'horror' comes solely from jump scares - a tool that is utilised in this film, but is fortunately very limited in its usage. One particular reveal scene has a good build up with no jump scare; it keeps you on the edge of your seat without releasing all of the tension with one quick cut.

The comedy in this film was also handled very well, with the traditional 'comedic relief' character actually not being annoying(!) It didn't feel out of place, and the movie doesn't take itself too seriously, which is a good thing considering the twist at the end.

'Get Out' is an excellent film to watch in this otherwise lacklustre month for film. There are a few gripes I had with the film; a few scenes don't appear to make much sense once the whole feature has been seen, but these didn't hamper my experience. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film, and I would recommend anyone 'Get Out' and watch this now!

8/10
